The Best Stories of 2022 Video Highlights From 2022
Campus was bustling this year as new and renovated buildings opened, student activities returned in full, and the mix of academics, athletics, and cultural events were in full display.
College Photographer Katie Lenhart, who took over from Eli Burakian ’00 in September, looked back at Dartmouth News photos from throughout 2022 and picked out some of her favorites.
In the captions below she explains what she found most striking in photos from Burakian, Robert Gill, Office of Communications intern Julia Levine ’23, and Lenhart herself.
At their core, they show that there is always something new to be learned or experienced at Dartmouth.

Abigail Johnson ’22 watches a winter storm at the Skiway in January. At first glance Robert’s photo appears to be in black and white, but then you begin to see moments of color popping up around the windows. (Photo by Robert Gill)

There are so many people who make Dartmouth run, such as Nathan Potter, who was blowing snow at the skating rink on the Green in January. The movement of the snow is almost reminiscent of ballet. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

The Nordic ski team practices on fields near Storrs Pond in January. The skiers look like part of the landscape, miniature versions of the spindly pines popping up from the snow. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

There is so much obvious and unconstrained joy in this scene from the human dogsled races at winter carnival. Eli captures that happiness, and all the color contrasting with the dark clouds behind Baker Library. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

There’s a wonderful perspective here from the “Rent” dress rehearsal at Moore Theater in the Hopkins Center in February, the way the lightbulbs become characters in the scene, instead of just the colors they normally cast onto the stage. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

Sometimes you just get the perfect moment on camera, and Eli really did that during the 5K Color Run by members of the Class of 2024 at the Geisel School of Medicine. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

Daniel Allman, at left, a doctoral student in physics and astronomy, and Kevin Wright, an associate professor of physics and astronomy, have developed a superfluid atomic circuit to study electron behavior. It almost looks like a little city, with what could be telephone poles and cross-streets, and two giant physicists looking over it. (Photo by Robert Gill)

Julia’s photograph has a thought-provoking symmetry between the head dancers’ feathers and Baker Tower. It was exciting to have the Dartmouth Powwow return to the Green with dancers and others in traditional dress. (Photo by Julia Levine ’23)

We see so many photographs of caps and gowns, jubilant faces, and high-profile speakers at graduation season. This photo from the days leading up to commencement shows there is a lot more to the story. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

Dartmouth has a one-of-a-kind setting, nestled in this lovely valley, so close to nature and beauty. Eli captures that in this aerial photo in July. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

There is some great geometry at play in this photo of a student working in Fairchild. (Photo by Eli Burakian ’00)

The Dickey Center at Dartmouth regularly hosts participants in the Young African Leaders Initiative for a couple of weeks in the summer. We were able to join them in early August for a relaxing canoe trip up the Connecticut during their stay. (Photo by Julia Levine ’23)

Candlelight so often represents solace or hope, and, happily, it was the latter that was expressed as the incoming Class of 2026 participated in the Dartmouth tradition of Twilight. I love the sense of community Julia shows in this photo. (Photo by Julia Levine ’23)

Sometimes you can walk around campus looking for photos and nothing will jump out. Then, once in a while, you come across a scene that feels as though it was just waiting for you to photograph it. Such was the case with film major Emily Charland ’19 catching up on reading outside the Black Family Visual Arts Center in September. (Photo by Katie Lenhart)

First-year students Chelsea Mills ’26 and Rachel Kabala ’26 joined an Outing Club trip to Riverview Farm in Plainfield, N.H., in October, where apples were picked and pumpkins were purchased. It was great to see so many students excited about local produce. (Photo by Katie Lenhart)

I was driving on Route 5 in October looking for foliage shots when I noticed the men’s crew team coming back down the Connecticut River, finishing up practice. So of course I pulled over at the first available spot, and this was what I saw. (Photo by Katie Lenhart)

Members of the Dartmouth community gather annually to celebrate Diwali on the Green. Julia’s perspective here makes you feel like you’re standing on the edge of the actual scene, not looking at a photograph. (Photo by Julia Levine ’23)

There were about 10 seconds between the time flames reached the top of the bonfire structure and when the “26” was consumed. Moments pass so quickly, and while 10 seconds may sound short, it feels like a luxury. (Photo by Katie Lenhart)

“Pippin” was the last musical performed in the Hopkins Center before it closed in late November for its upcoming renovation and expansion. This was the final dress rehearsal, near the end of Act 1. I have photos from right before and after this moment, but this one—the one note where their hats were directly above them—stayed with me. (Photo by Katie Lenhart)

After an extensive renovation, Dartmouth Hall reopened this November, just in time to be dusted with the first snow of the season. (Photo by Katie Lenhart)
